Backing tracks allow bands, singers andartists to give a clean cut, professional performance of the Songs they play intheir repertoire. Although they are more suitable forsome musicians and singers, rather than others, backing tracks can be used tobenefit all bands and artists to a degree in some way. Cover bands and tributebands or artists especially. On average, a lot of bands consist of a drummer,bassist, guitar player, sometimes two, and a lead singer, with the other bandmembers providing backing vocals for the lead. Also, in a lot of cases, not allband member musicians can sing and a lot of musicians can’t sing and play theirinstruments at the same time. In a lot of cases, musicians want to concentrateon their own skill without having to think about doing something else at thesame time. This limits the vocal performance of the band because they can’tcover harmonies that may, in fact, be critical. Other advantages of discoveringbacking tracks is the addition of a variety of instruments that you may want onthe odd song, but you don’t necessarily want that instrument in your band fulltime. A good example is the keyboard, sax, harp etc – some songs cry out for theaddition of a keyboard/sax/harp sound, but many bands only have a basicline-up, after all, who wants to pay a keyboard player if he only appears on acouple of your songs. This is where backing tracks comeinto play. You can add specific tunes to specific areas or moments of the songsyou play. You can add keyboard, percussion, horn, virtually any instrumentyou’d like to give a fuller, richer sound to the finished article, and evensome backing vocals. It’s a good idea to be careful about how much you add to atrack in terms of backing vocals. If you need to replicate a choir or replacetop end harmonies that are out of your range, or vocals where more than two ofyou have to contribute , then go ahead, but generally, if it’s not absolutelynecessary, putting in too much can ruin a song rather than optimizing it. Thenatural feel for a live band and some of the rawness in live instruments isalways a better sound than adding too much and turning the performance into aKaraoke event. Using backing tracks is very much the cherry on top of the cake,and should be viewed in this way. There is a lot more range to be hadby using backing tracks and freeing up your artistic license. Almost allperformers can benefit from using tracks on stage. It helps to make thingssound just right, and will help to earn even more respect from your audience.
