Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam Set to Tour Australia Solo
If you were around in the nineties, then you know that Pearl Jam were a huge thing.
While Australia and the US both have their own rock and pop scenes, Pearl Jam’s appeal was pretty well universal. Nirvana was all about youthful angst and apathy while Pearl Jam was a little more ambitious, setting their sights on a deeper kind of angst, an existential honesty.
Songs like “Once” dealt with the human instinct towards violence while “Black” focused on eternal loss and unrequited romance, and “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” addresses those relationships that can be profoundly deep, vital to our existence one day, but which may fade away to little more than a vague recognition years later.
Not to disparage the rest of the band, but most fans agree that the core of Pearl Jam, the thing that made it one of the strongest bands of the nineties and one of the most important of the last fifty years, was Eddie Vedder’s song-writing combined with his deep, gravelly voice. The bluesy sound of those vocal cords expressing sincere, oftentimes painful truths, Vedder may have been the closest thing Generation X had to their own Jim Morrison.
Makers sense then, with such a huge following, that if you want to check out the upcoming solo tour Vedder is taking across Australia, you’d better get your tickets early. The tour doesn’t really kick off until March 2011, but with tickets on sale in December 2010, you can bet that more than a few cities will be sold out well before the first show.
Here are the dates and locations for the Eddie Vedder solo tour shows in 2011.
March 10 – QPAC Concert Hall, Brisbane
March 12 – QPAC Concert Hall, Brisbane
March 15 – Royal Theatre, Canberra
March 16 – Civic Theatre, Newcastle
March 18 – State Theatre, Sydney
March 19 – State Theatre, Sydney
March 24 – Palais Theatre, Melbourne
March 25 – Palais Theatre, Melbourne
March 27 – Thebarton Theatre, Adelaide
Unfortunately, there is not information available yet about West Australian stops, but the demand is certainly there, so it’s likely the tour will go from coast to Australian coast.
So far, the Eddie Vedder solo tour has received positive reviews for the most part.
A few cynical fans have complained that they’re really not interested in Vedder without Pearl Jam, but most have noted that he still provides that wild energy he’s always been known for, and that his ability to get intimate with the crowd, to make them feel personally connected with The Music, it’s still there.
Given Vedder likes to do a little drinking (and what have you) to loosen up a bit before going on stage, you really never know what to expect out of him. One night he might launch into a tirade against lip-syncing pop stars, another night he might climb down into the audience and interact directly with the fans.
All you can be sure of is that the music will be rocking and you’ll have a story to tell after the show.
